Reader’s Review

The is the first book in the very popular series by Chris Grabenstein. The main character of the book is a cool kid who hates reading and loves playing video games, but is inspired when the world’s most famous game maker designs a new library. When he and a group of other children get a chance to visit the library, they must participate in an elaborate escape room before they can get out. There are lots of puzzles and references to modern and classical books, as well as games and tv shows. Kids will likely enjoy the puzzles and the humour, especially if they are already familiar with the book and media references. While there are some general themes of friendship and doing the right thing, adults will likely find the book lacking in depth and any kind of serious plot and character development.

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: There are numerous references to modern media content, including video games, as well as reality tv shows. One board game has players find different objects, including droopy underwear.
  • Language: Main character is called a sore loser by his brother. Talk of animals (geese and dogs) farting. In one games squirrels go around biting butts of others. Other objectionable words include crap, stupid and booby trap.
