Reader’s Review

A popular picture book about a boy and his friend duck who go looking all around the world (and in space) for God but eventually realize that God can be seen not directly but through His creations. Children will appreciate the colourful pictures and the unique animals they meet (adults too may not have heard about a hoopoe, an ibex, a mandrill and anglerfish), but towards the end, the explanation of seeing God may be difficult for very young children to understand, and neglects some important theological considerations.

To look out for

After searching for God, Ilyas says he knows God can’t be seen the way we see material things, but we know God to be true by seeing His creations. Theologically this is not an accurate way to prove God’s existence, as we learn about God’s characteristics through His creations (such as His beauty or His wisdom), but His existence is not separate from His creation such that we would need to look at His creation to believe that a God exists.
