Reader’s Review
This is an astonishing survival story of a group of men who travelled to the Antartica and became trapped in the ice early in the 20th century. After months of grueling conditions and some of the coldest temperatures in the world, the men survived against all odds and all 27 crew members were found alive. The author does an excellent job of combining narratives with facts about the Antartica. The story will capture the attention of all readers, children and adults alike, but because of the level of English and some of the graphic content it is not recommended for young children or sensitive readers.
To look out for
- Violence: The men have to kill their animals (both the cat and many dogs) as well as numerous Antarctic animals in order to survive. There are also many dangerous and scary situations the men have to endure, include amputating a toe because of frostbite, falling into icy waters, countering animals, etc.
