Reader’s Review

This popular book about a lost community will appeal to readers with a wide range of interests; it includes a mystery,  adventure, a dystopian society, and courageous characters. The unique plot revolves around two children who are a part of a lost underground society that is quickly deteriorating as supplies run out, but no one knows how to escape. There are numerous themes worthy of discussion, including hints of religious themes such as the existence of a Creator, and the need for a Savior (although no one in the book believes in a religion). There is one conversation about a boyfriend, but other than that no violence or language that would be inappropriate for sensitive readers.

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: The residents of Ember often wonder who created life, but they don’t have any concept of a God. Residents sing about a future which is bright and hopeful, but they are regarded as somewhat foolish and simpleminded.
  • Romance: Lina’s friend has feelings for another worker who steals secret food items and gives them to her because he likes her.
  • Violence: There is no violence, but there are some scary moments as the two children escape the city in complete darkness, while being chased by guards.
