Reader’s Review
A heart-wrenching and harrowing historical novel about a rare topic – the expulsion of Indian residents from Uganda under President Idi Amin. The main characters are an Indian girl and an African boy who never thought they had much to worry about until the political unrest changes everything. Can they remain friends despite what is happening around them? The violent events, especially the capture and disappearance of Asha’s dad, may be too much for younger or sensitive readers.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: Asha and Yesofu are best friends. Their friendship is platonic although other kids make fun of Yesofu for having a girlfriend.
- Violence: Indian men are killed. Asha’s dad is captured by the Ugandan military, and she must leave the country without him.
