Reader’s Review

A classical, thought-provoking book that is impossible to put down, the Giver will leave your mind spinning and your heart kindled. A worthy read for a slightly older audience because of one scene where the main character describes an explicit dream.

To look out for

  • Romance: Jonas describes a dream in which he wishes a female friend would remove her clothes and enter a tub. Such dreams are named ‘stirrings’ and are dealt with daily injections that everyone must take to prevent any ‘stirrings’
  • Violence: Jonas is horrified when he learns that unwanted individuals (including babies and seniors) are killed and not sent to another place to live as he thought. The Giver transfers painful and violent memories of starvation, thirst and war, including a violent scene where soldiers die on a battlefield.
