Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See is commonly referred to as one of the best historical fiction novels ever written. It follows the story of a German boy and a French girl, and their paths that lead them throughout the second world war and eventually to each other. However, the book does contain some problems, and is more suitable for teens or young adults that for preteens.

To look out for:

Islamic Values: The boys at Werner’s school are heartless and cruel, with the exception of one boy and Werner himself. When Werner’s friend is bullied by his peers, Werner consistently fails to stand up for him, but later on regrets. Later on in the book, a non-graphic rape scene occurs that is somewhat disturbing.

Profanity: There are several instances of swear words, as well as couple inappropriate references to women made by men.
