Reader’s Review

An engaging survival story with a lot of action, emotion, but also scary scenes that may alarm younger or sensitive readers. Two brothers desperately trek across a desert to survive, but it isn’t until the end that we realize why. Includes great themes about the love between siblings, and helping others even when you’re struggling.

To look out for

  • Islamic Value: Kids are left alone by their parents, and one set of siblings runs away from their grandparents because they’re running out of food. A lot of betrayal from adults towards the kids.
  • Romance: John comments on a girl being pretty, and the two hold hands as they walk across the desert.
  • Language: use of the word ‘crap’ and ‘butt’, and some mention of peeing in the desert
  • Violence:  John and Stewart are robbed of everything at gun point, in a very traumatic scene. In return the older brother steals a truck and slashes tires. Neighbors and families in desperation brandish knives and even guns. Stewart almost dies
