Reader’s Review
This is a very interesting look at the lives of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan in the format of a graphic novel. The story tells both the story of the remarkable growth of Helen Keller’s ability to communicate because of the dedication of her teacher, but also the troubled childhood of Annie Sullivan herself. The illustrations are captivating, but at times confusing and require some thought to interpret. The book is sad at the end, but overall the story is a very powerful one and easier for children (and adults) to read in this format.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: Annie’s troubled childhood leads her to act out in school and rebel against the students.
- Violence: Annie must use some force (but no violence) to tame and teach Helen initially.
