Reader’s Review
This picture book by the popular author Rukhsana Khan discusses two issues that many children can relate to – the difficulty of living with younger siblings, and the conflict between different cultural practices. Rubina is invited to her first birthday party, but she can only go if she takes her younger sister. Her sister ends up spoiling everything and even eats Rubina’s precious red lollipop. Now Rubina must decide whether she wants her sister to go through the same experience. The illustrations in this book are wonderful and will capture the attention of all age groups, and anyone with siblings will relate to the tension between the sisters. What is disappointing is the attitude of the mother and her lack of support for Rubina. Her lack of awareness about birthday parties is also hard to believe.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: Rubina tries to explain her tricky situations to her mom, but her mother is not willing to listen to her daughter and shows little sympathy for her. She is also displayed as having no idea about the differences between her own culture and the culture of the country they now live in.
