Reader’s Review

From the author of ‘The One and Only Ivan’, this is another touching novel about a difficult subject. In this book, the main character struggles with hunger and homelessness as his parents are forced to leave their home and live in a van. He gets through this difficult time with the help of a large imaginary friend who happens to be a cat. Applegate manages to discuss a wide range of emotions and thoughts while still keeping the story light and fun to read for all ages. The love between the siblings and their parents is also commendable.

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: Father mentions that he likes to drink rum. Jackson steals two items, but with the help of his imaginary friend, he apologizes. Young readers may find the cat confusing – is he real or just a figment of Jackson’s imagination?
