Reader’s Review
The concept of a young girl finding her place in middle school by starting a cupcake club with like-minded friends, will likely appeal to preteen readers (or girls aged 6-9). What is unfortunate however, is that a good plot line is spoiled by an unnecessary emphasis on fashion and other shallow middle school pursuits, especially when the language and target audience is younger than middles school.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: Frequent mention of characters having parents that are divorced. . Many of the girls agonize over their school outfits. Katie learns about the magazine Teen Style and other girls show her how to go online and look through the articles that discuss what actors wore to a ceremony.
- Romance: Callie comes back from camp boy-crazy, with posters of male singers and actors on her wall
