Reader’s Review
A captivating three part series about a group of kids who compete to be the youngest to climb mount Everest. The language is simple and engaging, like many of Gordon Kormon’s book, and the story is full of suspense and danger. The story is fictional, and at times a little hard to believe, but will keep the interest of kids, especially preteens. There are three books in the series: The Contest, The Climb and the Summit, with the last one being the most suspenseful.
To look out for
- Islamic values: Some of the boys show qualities of jealous or antagonism towards one another, and get very competitive.
- Romance: Brief mention of a girl having a boyfriend.
- Language: Occasional use of the word stupid. One child is called shrimp by the others.
- Violence: Boys come across a frozen body. Many of them fall and get injured. One boy sabotages the competition, and eventually dies of hypothermia.
