Reader’s Review

This is a highly entertaining and creative book about a boy with many ideas and a whole lot of spunk. There are some instances of conflict between students and teachers which are worth discussing with children, but kids and adults will enjoy the story of a boy that unintentionally changes the English language by introducing a new word. It may inspire creativity in children – although the very successful ending is unlikely in the real world!

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: Main character often comes up with crazy ideas that challenge teacher rules, at one point turning the classroom into a beach by adding sand and using t-shirts to create a volleyball. In other instances he intentionally asks questions to distract the teacher and stall classroom learning.

Note that some of Andrew Clement’s other books on school life are not as appropriate in terms of content or language.
