Reader’s Review

This popular series for kids includes 19 books about some of the worst natural and man-made disasters throughout history including earthquakes, blizzards, hurricanes, shark attacks, fires and battles. Each story is about a child or a group of children who are present during the disaster and narrowly escape. The events are based on historically accurate facts, and the children face harrowing dangers, often injured and separated from their families. Some of the books are less scary (such as the one about the Titanic), but others are graphic and may be too frightening for young or sensitive readers. But for kids who can handle the situations, these stories will keep them engaged and teach them about history in the process.

To look out for

  • Violence: Children are in perilous situations, separated from family, injured, frost-bitten, escaping from fire, etc. I Survived D-Day includes descriptions of soldiers being gunned down and blood in the water.
