Reader’s Review

This classic book by the author of Secret Garden gets mixed reviews from kids. The story is of a young and kind-hearted boy from New York who finds out that he is in fact the sole surviving heir to a British earldom. He is forced to live with his bad-tempered grandfather the Earl, who separates him from his beloved mother, but his truthful and patient nature gains him the love of everyone around him. The book has been criticized for being old-fashioned and overly sentimental.

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: Although Cedric has no desire to be rich, earldom and a class society is still described as the common way of life in England.
  • Language: the word gay is used in a traditional sense of meaning happy
