Reader’s Review

A unique look at the racial divide between Black and White Americans through the story of  Maniac Magee – an orphan who is legendary for his ability to run. Heart-warming, funny and eccentric, it makes an excellent addition to any home or school library.

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: Children in one home are neglected. Some adults and kids smoke and drink alcohol.
  • Language : Some use of the word ‘belch’ and ‘fart’. Maniac is called racial insults such as ‘fishbelly’ and ‘honky’.
  • Violence: Maniac often lives on the streets or in a zoo with animals. He runs away from a home, one of the people who takes care of him dies. One poor white family prepares to defend their place from Black people.
