Reader’s Review
A touching book about survival, animal rights, and making the right choices. Moon Bear takes place in Loas, and tells the story of a young boy who must provide for his family by leaving them and working in a bear farm where a cruel owner removes bile from bears to make money. While the book is written for preteens, and doesn’t describe the torture of the animals in great detail, it still might be too much for sensitive or younger readers.
To look out for
- Violence: Tam’s father is killed by a landmine (although the explosion is not described). The bear farm owner is violent and beats Tam. The bears are described as being in pain and weakened after bile is removed from them. In the final confrontation between Tam and the owner, the owner is killed.
