Reader’s Review
A young boy is traumatized by a tragic event where he and his mom almost drown. Unable to leave home, and barely able to talk, he relies on his protective twin sister and loving grandmother to recover. Author does a wonderful job of taking difficult topics of grief, trauma, racism, family and loss and presenting it in a book (written in verse) that is both fun and deep at the same time, and appropriate for preteens.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: In his grief, James’ uncle is cruel to him after the tragedy. James becomes friends with the dentist’s daughter. James and his sister leave to see the blue moon without telling any adults.
- Violence: James and his sister are bullied by three boys in their neighborhood. James must relive the terrible night when he and his mom almost died, in order to recover. On their journey to find the blue moon, they are injured, hungry and in a dangerous situation.
