Although there’s lots to love about this second book in the Planet Omar series, a few major issues spoil what would otherwise be a wonderful addition to any library. The story revolves around Omar and his friends trying to save his local mosque by raising money. They get the entire school involved, and the book does a wonderful job of describing the role of a mosque in the lives of Muslims. However of concern is the alternate form of swearing and general insults that the siblings use with each other. Also towards the end as Omar looks for his money, he and his friends spy on five close friends and family members, even sneaking into their rooms/offices to see who is the thief.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: Omar and his sister get into many mini-fights, and often call each other names (however the end his sister ends up doing something nice for him to his surprise)
- Language: Omar and his sister are surprised when they hear their mom ‘swear’ using alternate words such ‘what the bus’ and ‘sugar and two pancakes’. They imitate her style
- Romance: Charlie gives away a free cookie to a girl who says she likes his smile
