An inspiring story about the first female US athlete to participate in the Olympics in hijab. While the story starts out somewhat slow, readers will hold their breath and root for Ibtihaj as she works ferociously to achieve her goal, all while facing the prejudice and pressures of being a colored and Muslim athlete in a sport that was not used to minority players.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: Ibtihaj speaks about her struggles to maintain her faith and her hijab despite her surroundings. Her coaches tend to be male, and she works closely with them sharing her sorrow and joy with them.
- Language: One use of the word ‘b-h’ in the contest of college girls talking to each other.
- Violence: Ibtihaj faces numerous injuries and illnesses in her quest to Olympic glory
