Reader’s Review
An apocalyptic story about a group of children who are told that there is no one left in the world except them, and that if they work and study hard, the future of human existence lies in their hands. For readers who enjoy this genre of literature, it is an engaging and suspenseful story told in captivating English. The author does a good job of describing the surroundings and the feelings of the children. However the story is hard to believe at times, and there are some issues when it comes to language and violence – especially for younger kids.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: The teacher in charge of the children uses deception and lies to make sure the children believe the story they have been told about the end of the world. She encourages the children to lie, and convinces a character that her memories are made up and not real.
- Language: The children do a fair amount of bickering and name-calling between themselves, including the occasional use of words such as stupid, shut up, oaf and dummy.
- Violence: Kids pretend to be soldiers who are shooting at each other.
- Romance: Kids talk about one of the boys having a crush on one of the girls.
