Readers Review:  Touching story about child with autism who deals with the troubles around her with integrity and honesty, despite her many challenges. An excellent introduction to children who are differently abled and the difficulties they face. There is so much to discuss here with children; a great way to teach empathy and gratitude. Would make for a great novel, although it may not interest all preteens because the idiosyncrasies of the main character can be difficult to understand.  Also note that the main character is very close to her beloved pet dog.

Look out for:

  • Islamic Values : the father is borderline abusive, he drinks often and does not understand his daughter’s condition. He lacks patience or compassion. He lies about his wife’s disappearance. To make up for this, his brother is the complete opposite – kind and understanding and a source of comfort for the main character.
  • Violence: the father kicks the dog, and throws things at his daughter.
