Readers Review

This is a highly-praised account of three refugees escaping dangerous situations in different parts of the world and at different time periods. The book is well written and engaging for teens and young adults who will appreciate the stories of the three children from Germany, Cuba and Syria. The book is educational, full of historical information, and gives insight into the suffering of children around the world. Note however, that the book is very disturbing and upsetting at times as it describes death, suffering and the many terrible situations that the children endure.

Look out for

The book may be inappropriate for children and sensitive readers because of the descriptions of betrayal, violence, death, and bombings.

  • Islamic Values: One of the refugees sees his father almost commit suicide
  • Violence: Nazi atrocities towards Jewish prisoners is described, refugees escaping by boat are attacked by sharks, homes are bombed in Syria, prison torture and beatings are mentioned. Characters lose close family members in front of their eyes. Family members are torn apart
  • Romance: refugees on boat flirt with a passenger
