Much darker than previous installments but a riveting read.

To look out for:

Islamic values: War is highly condoned, and pacifists are condemned. The entire book is very anti-German. Rilla is engaged very early.

Romance: Rilla’s sweetheart kisses her than asks her to ‘save her lips’ for him. Brief mentions of lovers and romances.

Profanity: The original version of Rilla of Ingleside was trimmed, as it contained historically accurate but politically wrong terms used to describe the enemy. Still, mildly insulting words are present in the book.

Violence: The entire novel is centered around WW1, thus its dark theme. Rilla’s three brothers and their friends enlist to fight for Canada. One boy is killed, another wounded and captured, and frequent mentions of casualties and battles occur. A woman chases a man with a hot dye pot when he irks her (no one gets hurt). A character saves a baby from certain neglect and most likely death.
