Reader’s Review
This is one book in a series of science comics written and illustrated by Andy Hirsch. Each book goes into great detail about a topic such as an animal, a natural phenomenon like volcanoes or coral reef, or an invention such as robots and rockets. Readers will enjoy the illustrations which are colourful and engaging and the best part of the books. The information however is extremely detailed and informative and may not appeal to all children. In this book about trees many technical terms appear on each page which will be lost on most readers. Also unfortunate are the conversations by the cartoon characters which are sometimes rude or flippant. However for readers who are inclined towards non-fiction, there is much to learn.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: In the discussion of pollination there is mention that male larvae seek out females and then die, with some hearts in the comics.
- Language: Acorn calls frog froggo. Cloned trees referred to as suckers.
- Violence: When acorn gets tired of the frog, he plays a prank on him to blow him up and remove him from the scene.
