- Violence: the 4 main characters are told they will die because of a genetic defect. They are removed from their homes which causes them distress. 2 almost die when fighting mythical beasts. There are guns, capsized boats, and a fire that nearly suffocates them. Jack repeatedly dreams of his own death.
