To look out for
- Violence: There are two harrowing accounts in the novel which may be difficult to read for sensitive readers. One is the story of how the main character abandons his beloved dog when he no longer has any food to give him. And the second is the lengthy narration of the family’s survival through a year of famine which includes detailed descriptions of the emotional and physical effects of starvation. Author mentions the death of villagers but no immediate family members die.
