Reader’s Review
Another popular adventure series by Enid Blyton, author of the Famous Five and The Secret Seven series. Many adults will remember having read these books as children, although they are less common in the United States. This series includes 15 books with a similar theme – five children who find different mysteries they must solve. The writing is simple enough that even younger readers who are beginning to read chapter books will be able to enjoy the books. There is some language to be careful of, and the negative relationship between the children and the police officer is unfortunate.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: The children are in constant competition with the police officer to solve the different mysteries they come across. Both sides dislike each other, and the kids consistently play practical jokes on the police officer to scare him off or to keep him from finding evidence. In return the police officer is rude to the children.
- Violence: Children find themselves in dangerous situations while solving their mysteries, including being kidnapped.
- Language: Characters dislike the police officer and they call each other names. One of the main kids is nicknamed Fatty. Initially the others make fun of him because of his size. In addition there is the occasional use of words such as stupid, crazy, idiot, and shut up.
