Reader’s Review
The sequel to the well-loved book ‘The One and Only Ivan’ – this book will only make sense to readers who have read the first book. The book is told from the point of view of the dog Bob, Ivan’s friend, who struggles with the concepts of friendship, love and trust, and wonders if it is worth giving up a life in the wild to become a domesticated pet. Adults may appreciate the myriad internal dialogues during which Bob discusses his conflicts and emotions, but a lot of these will not be understood by kids. The end is somewhat cliche, but overall the book is worth reading for anyone who wants to hear more about Ivan and his friends.
To look out for
- Islamic Values: A lot of discussion around how dogs are intelligent and capable, and mistreated by human beings (which is not untrue). Bob’s sister talks about having many pups and not knowing where they went. She leaves Bob who is trying to rescue her missing pup.
- Romance: A female dog likes Bob and flirts with him. Bob’s nephew asks about Bob’s girlfriend.
- Violence: A hurricane tears through the zoo and leaves some of the animals missing or dead (though none of the main characters die). Ivan must be rescued from under rubble.
