Reader’s Review

The second book in the City of Ember series.  Lina and Doon are joined by over 400 citizens of Ember, and together they struggle to survive in a world that has been devastated by war and disease. They are helped by the people of Sparks, who’s generosity is severely tested by the huge influx of residents from Ember. The book discusses the concepts of friendship and war, and much of the plot revolves around averting a war between the two groups. A lot of worthy themes, but the large amount of animosity and talk of violence make it less of an enjoyable read.

To look out for

  • Violence: A lot of discussion about wars and plagues that destroyed most of the human population. Descriptions of a destroyed city. The people of Ember who come describe the large number of residents that drowned or were trampled while trying to escape. Within Sparks there is a small riot, mob fighting, preparations to use metal rods to hurt others. and the firing of an ancient weapon that almost takes the lives of a few and starts a large fire.
