She's not a daughter anymore, either. Who is she now? Reader’s Review

Although it starts out slow, it quickly becomes just as interesting (if not more!) than the first book (The War that Saved My Life). Fans of the main character Ada will be excited to read more about her journey and growth, and there’s lots of adventure and a number of emotional moments in this sequel which is less sad than the first book. Readers who have not read the first book may not understand everything that is going on. An excellent piece of historical fiction.

To look out for

  • Islamic Values: Adults drink wine at dinner and on a number of occasions. There is some indication that Susan may have had a relationship with another woman because mention is made of her deep attachment to Becky (see the review of the first book) however the author merely calls her a ‘friend’.
  • Violence: There are some violent scenes, one in particular where Ada sees a plane that is bombed and sees a soldier burning inside. Several characters are killed in bombings and crashes. Ruth’s grandmother dies in a concentration camp. Ada and Ruth almost have to shoot a horse that is very sick.
