Reader’s Review

A sensitive look at the differences between generations within an immigrant family. A young girl is embarrassed when her Chinese parents stop at the side of the road and gather watercress in paper bags. She refuses to eat it, until her mom tells her a story about how she and her family used to eat watercress during times of famine. Pictures show that the mom’s little brother is no longer a part of the family after the famine, which may be sad for sensitive readers.

To look out for

  • Violence: Mention is made that the mom’s little brother dies during the famine, but the word death is not used.
