Reader’s Review

A creative picture book that takes 3 ancient Buddhist tales and narrates them for young children. The beautiful watercolour illustrations are captivating, but more importantly the philosophical lessons from the 3 stories (about materialism, gratitude and letting go of anger) are useful for any age – though they may be too deep for very young readers.

To look out for

The stories have good morals – it would be beneficial to relate each story to similar concepts within Islamic literature. Also note that there are two other books in this series: Zen Socks which narrates a Buddhist story on persistence and hard work, and Zen Ghosts that is a ghost story that takes place during halloween and seems to have less educational and inspirational value than the other two.
